China’s hotels will be half-empty over lunar new year holiday
Almost 50% of hotel rooms will be unoccupied during Lunar New Year month.
The Lunar New Year holiday, often called the word’s largest annual migration, will generate 3 billion passenger trips in China this year, according to government forecasts.
But more travelers doesn't mean more guests for China’s hotels, with people typically visiting and staying with family or friends. Nationwide hotel occupancy rates during the holiday month have averaged 51.5% since 2007, compared with a non-holiday average of 64.3%, according to data from travel research firm STR.
